Aquaculture Feeds

Adapting fish to vegetable feed
The French VEGE-AQUA research project aims at improving adaptation of species such as trout, bars or sea bream, to a diet rich in raw materials of vegetable origin. It focuses on the genetic selection of fish suitable for food plants, the quantification and understanding of the response of different genotypes of foods or plants, in conditions of production in enterprises of selection (trout, sea bass, sea bream) but also in fish and experimental laboratory. This development program associates 4 companies (l'écloserie marine de Gravelines, les aquaculteurs bretons, la ferme marine du Douhet et les poissons du soleil), one technical center (le syndicat des sélectionneurs avicoles et aquacoles français) and two research institutes (Ifremer and INRA). Its budget, whose leader is the écloserie marine de Gravelines, amounts to 2.5 M€ [1].

Ethanol co-product shows promise in aquaculture diets
South Dakota State University uses new, high-protein co-products from ethanol production to partially replace fish meal in aquaculture diets. Professor Michael Brown’s upcoming studies include diets containing a high protein, dried distillers grains with solubles, or DDGS, produced by some corn ethanol plants. He’ll include that 42-percent protein product as one component in the diets of rainbow trout and yellow perch. SDSU’s aquaculture studies have used DDGS in fish diets for the past few years. But that work was done with conventional DDGS of about 29 percent protein, and about 8 to 10 percent lipids. Brown found that aquaculture feeds could include up to 20 percent of such DDGS products in tilapia feeds without greatly impacting performance, and similarly up to about 40 percent in yellow perch feeds under experimental conditions. Now they are trying to determine the maximum amount that could be included in the diet without adversely affecting growth performance and other metrics of fish production, such as feed efficiency and fillet or dress-out percentage [2].
